Praxis II Hints

Praxis II tests are content specific tests necessary for teachers to receive certification in a particular content area. Praxis II test scores allow teachers to obtain certification in a particular middle school or high school subject matter. Teachers can choose to take more than one Praxis II test and become certified in multiple subject areas, but they will need to be thoroughly prepared for each test.
  1. Praxis II Study Guide

    • Obtain a Praxis II study guide in your area of expertise. Educational Testing Service offers them and so do many bookstores. Become familiar with the types of questions on the test and practice sample questions. Check your answers and read the answer key to clarify any questions giving you trouble. Reinforce your ability to do the troublesome questions by practicing similar questions given in the book or by finding similar questions online. Keep a notebook of problems that give you trouble and hire a tutor if necessary.

    Read Test Taking Tips

    • Test taking strategies will be in your study guide. Key strategies include reading the question carefully, being conscious of time and making sure you fill in the proper grid for each question. Put a small check next to a difficult problem so that if you finish early, you can spend additional time on that question. Organize any materials you will need for the test, including reading glasses and number two pencils with erasers.

    Practice Timed Tests

    • Practice the tests in a simulated environment to the testing area. Set a timer so you can accurately determine how much faster you need to answer questions if you are unable to complete the test. Go through the test and identify what you do not know. Review the items. If you need additional information to reinforce the material, obtain a supplemental book on the subject matter. Many bookstores have detailed outlines of various subjects that are tested on the Praxis II. You can also find additional free questions by accessing on-line test prep review questions.

    Other Strategies

    • Create mnemonics of tough to remember information. If you outline what you are learning, start reviewing a different page each time you study so that you are fresh for the new material and do not spend more time reviewing the initial pages of your outline and skimping on later pages. Take advantage of your time by mentally reviewing what you know when you are alone. Enroll in a class to review the subject matter. Go to the Educational Services website and review questions. Look at Spark notes, flash cards and videos to review difficult to remember topics.
