What Is a WorkKeys Assessment Test?

WorkKeys is a group of standardized tests that measure workplace-related skills. Employers can use one or more of the tests as a way to screen job applicants or to decide who to promote. Workers can also benefit from taking the tests to discover their areas of strength or by using their test scores as a way to showcase their abilities to potential employers.
  1. National Career Readiness Assessments

    • The three tests at the heart of the WorkKeys assessments cover basic skills needed in virtually any workplace. The Applied Mathematics exam tests the worker's ability to perform basic calculations such as adding fractions and computing percentage discounts. Test takers are allowed to use a calculator on the exam. The Locating Information exam tests how well a worker can extract information from charts, maps and other graphics. The Reading Information exam measures the ability to comprehend typical written information one would encounter on the job.

    Foundational Skills Assessments

    • The Foundational Skills Assessments measure other, slightly more specific, abilities that are needed in the workplace. They include Applied Technology, which measures knowledge of workplace machines and equipment, and Business Writing, where test-takers compose a letter or memo. In the Workplace Observation and Teamwork exams, workers watch video clips of office scenarios and choose how they would respond in those situations. The Listening/Writing exam involves listening to a message and composing a summary of the main ideas.

    Personal Skills Assessments

    • The Personal Skills Assessments are not so much tests of abilities as they are assessments of an individual's values and behaviors. The Fit test measures what the test-taker values in a workplace and where their interests lie. The Performance test measures whether a worker is likely to engage in illegal or dangerous behavior on the job, and the Talent test asks the worker to rate their areas of strength and weakness.
