1. Survey
• Preview the material quickly to get an idea of what the text is about and how it is organized.
- Take a glance at the title, section headings, and images.
- Determine the main topic and purpose of the text.
- Notice the structure and organization of the text.
- Estimate how much time the material will require.
2. Question
- Look at the bold words and concepts and convert these into questions.
- Convert sub-headings into questions.
- Ask questions about the content and write these in the margins.
- Try to anticipate what the text is about to say and write questions that would lead to those expected points.
3. Read
• Read the text carefully and actively, trying to answer the questions you posed.
- Read for main ideas, key concepts, and supporting details.
- Pay attention to the author's arguments and evidence.
- Highlight or underline important information while reading.
4. Recal
- When you finish reading a sections, close the book and try to recall the main ideas and important information.
- Think back to the questions you generated prior to reading
- Write down the key points you remember from this section
5. Review
- At the end of each reading session, review your notes and make sure you understand the material.
- Quiz yourself on the key concepts and ideas.
- Summarize the main points in your own words.
