Practice analytical writing strategies. There is a section on analytical writing on the GRE. This section examines test takers' abilities to explain and provide supporting details on complicated ideas, express thoughts in a clear manner and study arguments and provide an interpretation. The analytical writing section is divided into two sections. The first section is the "Present Your Perspective on an Issue" task. It is 45 minutes and measures the ability to write a point of view on a topic provided. The second section, "Analyze an Argument" asks test takers to examine and critique an argument in 30 minutes. Practicing to write persuasive essays is an effective way to prepare for the first section of the test. Another way to practice for section two would be to write analytical responses to argument pieces that have been published.
Study verbal reasoning. The verbal reasoning section of the GRE tests the knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and verbal ability.Test takers will need to study analogies, antonyms, how to make complete sentences and reading comprehension. Upon completing the study of these selections, test takers should be able to understand, interpret and recognize the relationship between words and concepts and among parts of sentences. This section has 30 questions, and test takers should be prepared to complete it in 30 minutes.
Review math concepts. The quantitative section on the test examines the ability to perform basic math functions. In order to pass the GRE, test takers need to know basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis and have problem-solving skills.They must be able to complete high school level math problems. Test takers are allowed 45 minutes to complete the 28 questions in this section of the test. Practicing pacing strategies will help to complete the test in the allotted time frame.
