Give students a test to see where they should begin. Starting students where it is not too difficult for them will allow them to see that they can learn the material. This style of tutoring will help them gain confidence in the subject.
Start students with a worksheet that allows them to see success on their own. The worksheet should give an example of what is to be learned. The practice should be same type as the examples. Students should be able to answer everything correctly and in a timely manner before moving onto the next worksheet. If this cannot be done, students will need to do the worksheet again. This process ensures that students have mastered the material. If students move on too quickly before mastering the material on one worksheet, then the following worksheet will be difficult. This will cause them to question their ability to accomplish it on their own.
Move onto the next worksheet after the students successfully master the previous one. The next worksheet will only be slightly more difficult than the one just mastered. This allows students to become independent learners who know they can learn the subject if they work at it slowly.
Give worksheets daily. Typically, students only go to a Kumon Tutoring Center twice a week, but it is necessary for them to practice daily.
