Recruit other tutors to work for you. The best tutors are ones with direct training and experience in a subject matter, so you want to recruit tutors in the subject areas you want to be able to focus on. By paying the tutors hourly you will need to pay them only when you have active clients. It is best to employ only people with college degrees, so if a parent inquires about the tutor's educational background, you can firmly say all your employees are college-educated.
Choose a location. When starting out you can choose to not have a physical location. You can meet with your clients in their homes, at a library or other public location. Having a physical location will increase your initial investment and ongoing costs. However, it can also enable you to get drop-in business.
Determine costs and services. Decide how much you are going to charge for the tutoring. You will need to take into account all your expenses, as well as what the market can handle in your area. Based on the tutors you have on your team, you also need to make a detailed list of the services your company will offer. Tutoring can go beyond specific subjects. You can offer tutoring in things like writing and study skills.
Advertise your services. Create a flier that lists your services and all the appropriate contact information. Go to all the local schools and leave a flier in the main office, the school counselor's office, and, if the administration allows you to, leave a flier for each of the teachers. Leave fliers around town in areas families would be visiting. For example, you can leave fliers at the library, grocery stores, fast food restaurants and the city pool or recreation center.
Offer a referral discount. The best advertising available for a tutor is word-of-mouth. If the services you offer are good, the parents of your students will be happy and tell other parents. To encourage people to refer you, you can offer a referral discount. One parent can get a percentage off their next tutoring session if they refer someone who also obtains your services.
