Before a student can proficiently write in English without difficulty, he must have the ability to notice errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. To give the student an eye for this, place 10 incorrect sentences on a sheet of paper. With each progressing sentence, make the errors more and more difficult to catch. Begin the first sentence with several obvious spelling and capitalization errors. Then end the exercise with a sentence only containing minute errors. This exercise allows the student to grasp errors of all categories. Once he understands what an error looks like in the sentences, he will be less likely to make mistakes when writing on his own.
In order to increase the spelling abilities of the student, have her create smaller words from a larger word. For example, the word "Congratulations" contains several smaller words in it (i.e., tuna, grain, lag, tag). Have the student find these words by taking the letters and rearranging the letters into smaller words. Provide three large words for the student. These large words will serve as the basis for the smaller words. Have the student try to find ten smaller words from each given large word. The size of the student's word does not matter. If she cannot find ten additional words, use that time to give the student new words to learn. You could even provide an additional exercise with the new words you have given the student. Make the student write any new words and their definition. This way the student is learning as much as possible from the exercise.
To broaden the student's vocabulary, have him do this advertising exercise, which gives the pupil the opportunity to learn exciting new words that capture the reader. Descriptive adjectives are often used to entice a reader to buy a certain product. These adjectives also liven up writing assignments. Powerful advertising words include: new, clean, wonderful and easy. Have the student write down ten adjectives that a salesman trying to sell a car would use. If the student understands the power of these words in the beginning of his education path in English, the student will be on his way to success.
