Why does SE Hinton use her ininials?

SE Hinton used her initials because she wanted to keep her gender a secret. When she first published The Outsiders, she was only 16 years old and worried that readers wouldn't take her seriously if they knew she was a woman. She also thought using her initials would make it easier for people to remember her name.
