Why are names important to Piggy?

Piggy believes that giving objects and beings their proper names allows people to control and maintain order in the chaotic social landscape that the boys have found themselves in while marooned on the island.

Additionally, by referring to each other by their surnames ("Ralph", "Jack", "Piggy", etc.), rather than the nicknames by which many of the group know each other from back home (e.g., "Wacco","Maurice") there may have been an idea, on Piggy's part, that this level of formality might also help instill a greater sense of organization, respect, and authority among the otherwise unsupervised group of children.
