Nursery School Activities with Teddy Bears

Most preschool-aged children have a favorite Teddy bear. Incorporating Teddy bears into nursery-school activities is not only exciting for the children, but it also helps them want to learn since they can share their education with their special stuffed friend. Teddy bear days are quite common in nursery schools, and they are something both the teachers and students look forward to every year.
  1. Teddy Bear Picnic

    • Teddy bear picnics are commonly held in the spring, when the weather has warmed. Ask each student to bring a sack lunch, or ask some parent volunteers to organize a potluck picnic. Tell each student to bring a Teddy bear to school that morning. Before you go to the park, read the book "Teddy Bear Picnic," by Jimmy Kennedy. Then head to a nearby park or grassy area and enjoy your picnic lunch. Finish off the picnic with some active Teddy bear games and rhymes.

    Teddy Bear Math

    • Gather the students in a circle or group on the floor. Nearby, place two hula hoops on the floor. Ask each student to talk a little bit about his Teddy bear, like a show-and-tell presentation. When all of the students have finished, discuss how the bears are the same and different. Sort the bears by size into the two hoops: Ask the students with big bears to put them inside of one of the hula hoops, and the students with small bears to go into the other hula hoop. Then, retrieve the bears and think of other ways to sort them.

    Teddy Bear Stories

    • Have each student talk briefly about each Teddy bear in front of the class. Then, read them a book featuring a bear, such as a Little Bear story. Tell the students that they are going to make up their own stories about a bear. Pass out Teddy bear coloring sheets and have the students color the bears. As they are coloring, ask a parent volunteer or aid to go around to each student and ask each student to tell the parent one sentence about the bear that they are coloring. The aid or parent helper should then write that sentence on the bottom of the coloring sheet. Staple the sheets together and read the "story" to the class.

    Teddy Bear Snacks

    • Complement your Teddy bear activities by serving a special Teddy bear snack. Cookies or crackers in the shape of bears work well. Alternately, serve a bear-friendly breakfast by drizzling honey over bread that has been cut into the shape of a bear (use a cookie cutter and slices of bread). Gummy bears are another special treat for your Teddy bear day.
