Science Folder Activities for Preschoolers

Preschoolers need opportunities to use the new concepts they are learning in different, engaging ways. Folder activities work well to reinforce science concepts because preschoolers get a chance to quietly practice using what they have learned. Science folder activities should be simple enough to require little teacher assistance but engaging enough for the preschooler to want to repeat several times.
  1. Hot or Cold

    • Laminate a file folder and label it "Hot or Cold Game." On the inside right-hand side glue two large pockets. Label these pockets "Hot" and "Cold." Staple a large, clear plastic bag on the inside left-hand side and fill it with pictures of cold and hot items. Some suggestions are a cup of coffee, a bowl of soup, a glass of iced tea, a popsicle, a glacier, the sun, a hair dryer and the desert. On the bag tape simple directions for your preschoolers, telling them to place the picture in the right pocket. After looking at their work, let them empty the pockets themselves, mix up the pictures and place them back into the clear plastic bag.

    What to Wear

    • Let your preschoolers match articles of clothing to the correct seasonal bear. On the outside of your laminated folder, label it "Seasons--What to Wear?" On the inside right-hand side attach four laminated brown bears. Under each bear, label the seasons--spring, summer, fall and winter. On the inside left-hand side staple a large envelope with laminated pictures of clothing. On the back of the laminated pictures attach a dime-sized piece of sticky tack. Your preschoolers should remove one piece of clothing at a time from the envelop and attach it to the correct bear. For pre-readers place the bear in a location that shows the correct season--for instance, a beach scene for summer, a flower garden for spring, a colorful tree for fall and a snow scene for winter. For clothing, find pictures of swimming trunks, sun visors, flip flops, coats, scarves, snow boots, tennis shoes, T-shirts, long pants, sweaters and shorts.

    Identify the Senses

    • Use three folders for a preschool activity identifying the senses of touch, hearing and smell. For the sense of touch science folder activity, gather eight black socks and place a small object in each. Number the socks on the outside. Inside the folder, place a chart of the eight objects with the numbers 1 through 8 attached with sticky tack on the opposite side. Allow your students to touch the socks and guess the correct object inside them by placing the sock's number on the chart beside their guess.

Do the same with hearing by placing eight objects with sound in empty soup cans covered with cloth and a rubber band. Place the guessing board chart inside a file folder so students can match the numbers with what they think they hear.

For the smell file folder activity, place objects with scents into shallow plastic bowls and prick holes in the lids. Have the students match up what they think represents the smell with their folder chart. Allow students to peek inside the proper containers to check their own answers. Let your student mix up the numbers for the next player of the senses folder activity.
