Young Toddlers' Art Projects

Provide toddlers with the right materials and time to explore and they will make art they can be proud of. Encourage their attempts and make it a point to save some of their earliest works as a record of their growth. Toddlers are just learning how to control their bodies, so be sure their art supplies are appropriate for their small hands and limited abilities.
  1. 3D Paper Sculpture

    • Using a paper cutter, cut strips from magazines, colored paper, or junk mail. Set out these strips along with sheets of round stickers. Give the child a sheet of heavy paper and these supplies. Show him or her how to use a sticker to hold down one end of a strip of paper. Stick the other end down so that the strip is up in the air, forming a tunnel. Toddlers can twist the strips before sticking them down, put one strip inside another or just hang strips off the edge of the page.

    Crayon Rubbings

    • Even toddlers who are reluctant to color can make rubbings. White paper, crayons and items to rub are all you need. These items could be paper clips, leaves, rubber bands, coins, paper doilies or cardboard cutouts.
Work on a hard surface. Show the toddler how to cover the item with the white paper. Tape the edges of the paper down so that it doesn't slip, or hold it down as the child works. Rub the paper with the side of a crayon so an outline of the object appears. Toddlers are often amazed by this project and want to do it again and again.

    Lacing Cards

    • Lacing cards can be made with a piece of heavy cardstock and a hole punch. Punch holes randomly on the card. Gather colorful bits of yarn or shoelaces, pieces of pasta with holes, small cardstock shapes with holes, and beads. Tape one end of a piece of yarn or shoelace to the back of the lacing card. Show the toddler how to guide the string in and out of the holes in whatever pattern he or she chooses, using the shapes, beads, and pasta to decorate the string.
