How to Teach Sponge Painting

Sponge painting is a fun activity that children love. It encourages creativity while teaching kids about color blends and liquid absorption. Sponge painting also teaches kids about shapes, improves motor skills and shows kids how to handle art materials properly. It is important to monitor kids while they paint, since sponge painting can get messy. However, this activity is most enjoyable when kids have full freedom of artistic expression.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut multiple sponges of various textures into different shapes and sizes. Allow students to select three sponges each. Explain to the students that each texture will form a different imprint.

    • 2

Prepare a large, covered work area. Use the floor or join two large tables and cover the area with a tablecloth. Place your paint, remaining sponges and paper in the middle of the workspace. Have kids sit or stand around the workspace in a circle with their sponges.

    • 3

Demonstrate sponge painting to the children. Lay down a large sheet of paper. Take a sponge, dip it in the paint and dab the scrap paper to remove excess paint. Stamp your large paper multiple times with the sponge.

    • 4

Allow students to practice on your demonstration paper. Tell each student to select one sponge and have her dip it and stamp your paper. Use your paper to show the kids that the different sponge textures create different imprints.

    • 5

Allow kids to start painting using the demonstrated technique. Encourage them to use all of their sponges and a variety of colors.

    • 6

Allow time for each painting to dry. Leave the paintings at the work area while the kids clean up and wash their hands.

    • 7

Have kids explain their painting to the class. Encourage students to talk about the different shapes, colors and textures that they used while creating their artwork.
