How to Find a Head Start School for My Children in Fresno, CA

Head Start is a nationwide federally-funded program that promotes school readiness for children from low income families. Head Start programs provide early childhood education, with a focus on reading and math skills. Additionally, these schools offer social, health and nutrition services to enrolled children as well as their families. Various types of Head Start programs exist for children of different ages and situations, among them Early Head Start and Migrant/Seasonal Head Start. Studies have shown that Early Head Start program participants outperform their peers in cognitive, language and social-emotional development tests.

Consider the age of your child. For 0-3 years old, Early Head Start is the right choice. Children ages 3 or 4 will be enrolled in Head Start.

    • 3

Determine whether your child qualifies for the Migrant/Seasonal workers Head Start. If more than half of your family's income comes from agricultural work and your family travels to different geographic locations to find such work, your child may qualify for this program. Federal income eligibility requirements from Step 1 still apply. Migrant/Seasonal Head Start accepts children from birth to age five.
