Pearson's BASC-2, or Behavior Assessment System for Children Second Edition, is an educational assessment tool that helps teachers, administrators and other providers determine behavior problems through a series of scales, reports and observations. This test for children ages 2 through 5 (preschool version) uses a comprehensive approach that measures behavior across the child's entire environment. The BASC-2 is grounded in current behavioral and developmental research, and provides tools to assess the child from teacher's and parent's perspectives. The test includes specific assessments such as teacher rating Scales, parent rating scales and a structured developmental history. Preschool clinical and adaptive scales that the test employs includes adaptability, aggression, anxiety, attention, atypicality, depression, functional communication, hyperactivity, social skills and withdrawl. Teachers and other early childhood personnel can order this test directly from the Pearson Education website.
The ABAS (Adaptive Behavior Assessment System), also by the Pearson Education company, provides age-based tests for children from birth and up. This behavioral test uses research and data such as that from the American Association of Intellectual Disabilities to assess behavior in conceptual, social and practical areas. The ABAS has many different uses for the early childhood educator/provider including determining goals for the child and examining the child for ADD or ADHD behaviors. Scores and reporting are done with the kit's software package, developing a summary comparison, progress monitoring report and respondent report for parents or caregivers. You may purchase the kits online from Pearson in either the ABAS-II Examination Kit (includes preschool) or ABAS-II Infant and Preschool Kit.
The Preschool Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale (PreBERS) is a standardized test available from the Pro-Ed company. Four subscales including emotional regulation, school readiness, social confidence and family involvement combine into the total strength index. Educators and developmental personnel can purchase the test manual and examiner record forms directly from Pro-Ed's website.
