Safety Concerns With Toddler Art Materials

Art projects inspire toddler creativity while enhancing their fine motor skills. Before you start creating with your toddler, familiarize yourself with safety considerations for common art supplies. Toddler curiosity, coupled with the tendency to place their hands in their mouths, adds to the potential dangers when doing arts and crafts with young children.
  1. Toxic Ingredients

    • Not all art supplies are toddler friendly. Many adhesives, markers and paints contain dangerous ingredients that could be harmful if your child swallows them. Look for labels that indicate the product is non-toxic. Most washable kids' paints or tempera paints are safe for toddlers. When it comes to adhesives, choose water-based options. Avoid adhesives containing solvents. Plain white school glue is a safe option for toddlers. Old art supplies present a greater chance for toxic materials. They may contain lead, mercury and other toxic materials no longer used in art supplies. Buy fresh art supplies for your toddler.

    Choking

    • Small craft supplies present a choking hazard for toddlers since they often place items in their mouths. Avoid supplies with small pieces like sequins, beads, wiggly eyes and confetti that your child could easily swallow. Watch for containers with small parts. For example, a lid for a small container might be small enough for your toddler to fit in her mouth. If she swallows the lid it could become lodged in her throat and cause choking.

    Inhalation

    • Powdery art supplies sometimes fly into the air, allowing your toddler to inhale the powder. He could also get the powder in his eyes. Avoid things like powdered tempera paint or clay when working with young children. Even though the materials are mixed to create the end result, a toddler could inhale the powder during the mixing process. Aerosol art products like adhesives or paints could also result in inhalation.

    Safety Tips

    • Choosing safe products is only part of preventing injuries with art supplies. Constant supervision reduces the chances of your toddler placing any art materials in her mouth. Keep the supplies out of her reach, only handing her the materials she needs. Always read the label of the art supplies to check for potential dangers and warnings. Keep all items in the original container so you have access to the label. Wash your child's hands thoroughly after completing the art project to remove any remnants.
