Easy Pre School Cooking Projects

Cooking is an activity that young children enjoy because they get to help create what they eat. Choose recipes that have preparation steps suitable for small hands. Only adults should perform any cutting or cooking tasks, as preschoolers aren't old enough to handle a knife or hot items safely.
  1. Dough Shapes

    • Use frozen bread dough to create a variety of kid-friendly shapes. Thaw dough as directed on package. Help children roll out dough until its approximately 1/2-inch thick. Children can cut out shapes from the dough with cookie cutters or roll pieces of dough into balls, and use these to make a variety of shapes. Allow dough to rise until nearly doubled in size, then bake on a greased baking sheets according to package directions. Allow the the bread to cool before serving.

    Caramel Fruit

    • Melt caramel coating on the stove according to the directions on the package. Allow the sauce to cool until it is only warm to avoid burns. Help children insert blunt tooth picks into small fruits such as strawberries. Slice an apple and dip it into lemon juice to prevent browning. Give the preschoolers miniature cookie cutters and help them cut out shapes from their apple slices. Insert toothpicks into the each slice and allow the children to dip the apples and small fruits in the caramel sauce. Set the fruit on a sheet of wax paper and allow the caramel to cool completely before serving.

    Veggie Skewers

    • Peel and slice vegetables to prepare them for the preschoolers. Set out a selection of miniature cookie cutters and allow the children to cut shapes from carrots, squash and other vegetable pieces. Help the children thread their favorite vegetables onto skewers. Set the skewers on a greased baking sheet. Give each preschooler a basting brush and a small bowl of marinade, such as low-sodium soy sauce or barbecue sauce. Brush the vegetables with the marinade, then broil for four minutes. Alternatively, cook the kabobs on a barbecue grill for six minutes on each side. Allow the vegetables to cool before serving.

    Personal Pizzas

    • Give each preschooler a personal-sized pre-baked pizza dough round. Set out a variety of cheeses and vegetable and meat toppings. Help the children add sauce to their pizzas, then allow them to top the pizza with the toppings of their choice. Encourage the children to make designs on the pizza with their desired toppings, such as a pepperoni face. Bake the pizza as directed on the dough package.
