Teacher Activities for Infants

Infant activities should be designed to increase strength, motor skills and coordination as they grow. The activities don't need to be complicated or involve many resources, simple items such as pots and pans and paint can provide hours of fun under the supervision of a teacher.
  1. Social

    • Infants need social activities to learn to interact with others. Set up group activities such as finger painting where the infants can interact with each other and the teacher. Utilize assistants to have social time with small groups of infants, reading or singing, where they can all get a chance to participate with the teacher and the other infants.

    Physical

    • Infants need physical skills to improve coordination and balance. For infants already crawling, set up a soft play area for them to crawl around and climb on soft objects. It is important that the teacher supervises this activity to ensure the infants' safety. For infants not at the crawling stage, tummy time, where the infant lies on her belly, can increase strength as she tries to lift her head or push up.

    Fine Motor Skills

    • Motor skills help infants to hold, grip and control movements. Gross motor skills like crawling and running are developed by physical activities; fine motor skills can be improved by introducing infants to big building blocks, large crayons for drawing or making sounds on objects using a wooden spoon.

    Arts and Crafts

    • Arts and crafts help children develop their coordination and their motor skills. Give the infant crayons or washable paints. If the weather is nice, older infants can use chalk to draw on the playground outside, if supervised by the teacher, or they can use the paints to paint pictures.
