Church School Activities for Five Year Olds

Keeping young children's attention in church school requires planning numerous activities that will help them learn and stay engaged. Games, arts and crafts provide an opportunity for students to connect with the stories they are learning. Try out any of these activities for a low-cost way to enhance your church school lesson plans.
  1. Mobiles

    • Choose a story from the Bible that the students learned about in class. Examples include the story of the Three Wise Men or the Last Supper. Have the students draw pictures or cut out images from magazines that depict the events in the story. Attach the images to a hanger with strings in chronological order. The students can write a few words or sentences describing each picture. The mobiles are also an effective way to review the stories learned in the Bible.

    Fish and Bread Activity

    • A common story to teach younger students is how Jesus fed and helped many people. To help the students understand the stories, cut out shapes of fish and bread from colored construction paper. Give the students safety scissors and have them cut the fish and bread into smaller pieces and disperse them to the others students in the class. Ask the students to compare the amount of food they started with to the amount they finished with.

    Greeting Cards

    • Teach the students about the importance of helping others throughout the year, not just around the holidays. Have each student make a greeting card to give to a sick or elderly member of the congregation. Provide construction paper, markers, crayons and other decorative accessories. Help the students hand-deliver the cards so they are able to see the impact they make on others.

    Magnifying Glass Activity

    • Discuss with the students that God can see everything, including who you are on the inside. Collect various common objects and make sure each student has at least one object to observe. Examples include a feather, penny, rock, pencil, flower or tea bag. Give the students magnifying glasses and have them observe the details in each object. Explain to the students that Jesus is like a magnifying glass, helping us to see more of who God is.

    Design a King's Crown

    • When teaching a lesson about the different kings in the Bible, such as King David or King Solomon, have the students make their own crowns to decorate and wear. Use construction paper to cut out a shape of a crown. You may need to use two pieces of construction paper and attach them with glue or tape. Provide markers, glitter, and stickers or plastic jewels for the students to decorate their own crowns.

    One-Path Game

    • Teaching a lesson about the direct path to God can be confusing for younger students. This game will help demonstrate by following the teachings of Jesus, they can get closer to God. Divide the class into different teams. Create a straight path on the floor, using masking tape that is about 6 inches wide. Make one path for each team. Give each student a straw and each team a ping pong ball. Have each student try to push their ping-pong ball by blowing in their straw while trying to keep the ball inside the path. If the ball rolls outside the path, the student must return to the start line and begin again. To play outside, create the path using rope or cones.
