Directions for Playing Concentration for Preschoolers

The game of concentration, also called memory, calls for players to create pairs of matching cards. While adults enjoy playing with a standard deck of playing cards, try creating a more exciting deck of cards for preschoolers featuring images of animals, pictures of family members or even simple objects from around the house. Print pictures and glue onto index cards or card stock to create your own deck of concentration cards to entice your preschooler into playing a surprisingly educational game. Start with only a few pairs in the game and increase the number of cards as your preschooler masters matching.

Instructions

    • 1

Shuffle the deck of cards thoroughly.

    • 2

Arrange the playing cards face down in even rows.

    • 3

Choose the order the two players will take their turns with the youngest player taking her turn first.

    • 4

Turn over two cards, exposing the pictures to all players and stating the name of the picture on the cards. If the two cards match, the player keeps the cards and takes another turn. Otherwise, the next player gets to take his turn.

    • 5

Continue taking turns choosing two cards at a time and setting aside matches until all the cards are matched.

    • 6

Declare the player with the most matching cards the winner or just celebrate completing all the matches for a more cooperative game.

    • 7

Shuffle the cards and lay them out on the table to play again, adding more pairs of cards if your preschooler needs more of a challenge.
