Easy Paper Folding Ideas for Preschool

Introduce preschoolers to the beauty of origami with simple paper folding techniques. Be ready to help preschoolers with clear demonstrations and assistance lining up the edges of paper. Consider providing paper printed with the fold lines so preschoolers have a clear visual of where to fold. Easy origami folding also provides a review of many different shapes as you work toward the finished product. Use origami paper or regular construction paper.
  1. Flower

    • To create an easy paper flower, begin with a square of colored paper. Place it colored side down on a table in front of your preschooler. Instruct preschoolers to fold the bottom corner up to match the opposite top corner, forming a triangle. Draw a dotted line from the middle of the bottom of the triangle to just above the midpoint of the right angle. Fold the bottom right corner of the triangle up on this dotted line so the tip now sticks out over the left angle of the triangle. Fold the left corner up and over the folded right side in the same manner to form an inverted triangle flower with three petals on top.

    Butterfly

    • Instruct students to fold a square of paper in half, one bottom corner matching with the opposite top corner, with the colored side showing to form a triangle. Fold the triangle in half, matching the left corner to the right and forming a crease down the middle. Open the triangle again and lay it flat on the table. Fold the left corner up and across the triangle so the tip extends over the right angle just below the top point of the triangle. Open the triangle again and fold the right point across the left angle in the same manner. Open the triangle up again without flattening the folds to create the butterfly shape. Let preschoolers decorate their butterfly with paint or markers and add antennae made of curled ribbons.

    Frog

    • Preschoolers will adore hopping their easy folded paper frogs around the classroom. Start with a green square of paper placed colored side down on the table. Fold the square lengthwise, open it flat and then fold it width-wise. Open it flat again so you have one vertical and one horizontal crease across the square, dividing it into four equal squares. Fold each corner, one at a time, down toward the center point of the square and leave it folded. Fold the left and right top angles down to meet in the middle of the square in a straight line. Fold the bottom triangle of the square up and over the folded down top parts. Fold the bottom corners in so the points meet in the middle. Fold the bottom edge up and over the upper folded parts so the edge reaches the top of the bottom folded corners. Fold the edge back down onto itself to create the creased frog legs that make the frog hop. Allow preschoolers to decorate their frogs with eyes and push on the frogs' backs to make them jump.

    Doll

    • Turn your square of paper so it looks like a diamond with the colored side down in front of each preschooler. Show children how to fold the left and right corners in so the left and right top angles meet in the middle to form a straight vertical line. Fold the bottom point of the diamond up and over the top folded angles with the crease at the bottom edge of the folded angles. Turn the origami piece over so the folded pieces are now on the bottom. Fold the triangular point on each side from front to back, overlapping slightly on the back of the piece to make the arms of the doll. Fold the top of the head down or keep it pointed and let preschoolers decorate their doll with crayons to make eyes, clothes and hair.
