How to Teach a Class of Two-Year-Olds

Each two-year-old is different and has her own personality quirks. An entire class of rambunctious and energy-filled two-year-olds offers you an adventure and a teaching challenge. Most toddlers are able to at least say a few words and communicate basic needs and wants. Your job as a teacher for two-year-olds is to channel the creative curiosity of your students and to use their energy as a teaching tool.

Instructions

Practice turn-taking with your students. Provide your students with toys and books to play with and monitor the children to make sure each child gets play time with the toys. If your students begin to fight or argue over a toy, gently explain that it is important to share with friends. Set a timer for two minutes while a child plays with a toy. When the timer beeps, the other child can play with the toy.

Sing songs with your students to teach new ideas and reinforce old ones. Sing songs about cleaning when it's time to pick up the toys, sing "The Alphabet Song" to help your students learn their letters and sing songs that focus on numbers to teach counting. Make up songs about sharing or polite behavior at lunchtime. Remember that nearly any lesson can be made into a song. You don't have to be a skilled singer to put an important lesson to a catchy tune for your toddlers.

Explore with your students. Take your two-year-olds outside each day to explore nature. Talk about the grass and encourage children to touch and feel the blades. Explain what color the grass is. Point out flowers, insects and rocks. Let your students touch and explore both visually and physically as they play outside.

Read storybooks to your students each day. Have your two-year-olds sit in a circle while you share a special book with them. Be flexible, and realize that some students may have difficulty sitting through an entire story, so keep reading even if a few students begin to wander off and play with toys. Reading is one of the best ways you can prepare your toddlers for learning the alphabet and how to read.
