How to Teach a Digital Photography Class

You've mastered pixels and file compression, optical zooms and digital printing. Now it's time to share your expertise with others. Follow these steps to teach a digital photography class and help students make the transition to this new way of capturing and sharing their memorable moments.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the basics. Show your students how a digital camera differs from a film camera. You can give a simple overview of how digital cameras work, and let students practice locating the batteries, memory cards, viewfinders or preview screens and function buttons.

    • 2

Give students a chance to take photos. If possible, turn your students loose in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. Let them snap away at both still and moving subjects. Help them to choose composition menu options, select zoom or wide angle views and operate flashes.

    • 3

Review students' photos as a way of teaching the basics of viewing, saving and deleting photos. Share tips on improving composition and lighting. Be sure to praise your students' efforts.

    • 4

Discuss the fundamentals of saving digital photos, including various file-size considerations. Show students how to transfer photo files to computers or printers.

    • 5

Demonstrate printing techniques. Explain home and professional printing options, including color correction, sizing and choosing papers.

    • 6

Introduce students to photo editing software such as PhotoShop, and show them how it can be used to correct, manipulate and embellish digital photos.

    • 7

Help students explore other options, such as sharing photos online, building digital albums, creating presentation slide shows and recording digital video.
