Preschool Spider Projects

Adults may think of spiders as creepy crawlers, but preschoolers are often interested in arachnids, as these eight-legged creatures are so different. If you're a preschool teacher, consider engaging your students in spider-themed projects to cater to their interest about these creatures and teach them about spiders in a hands-on way.
  1. Handprint Spiders

    • Create spiders from preschoolers' handprints. Instruct children to press their hand into black finger paint, excluding their thumbs, and have them press their handprint onto a piece of white paper. Have them cover their hand with black finger paint again and press it onto the paper so that the palms overlap, but the fingers point in the opposite direction. The fingerprints serve as the spider's legs and the palms serve as the body. When the paint dries, have children glue two googly eyes to the body of the spider.

    Shining Spider Webs

    • Use glue and glitter to create spider webs. Fill bowls with glue and lay out black construction paper. Show children pictures of spider webs and allow them to use the pictures as guidelines for their projects. Have children dip toothpicks into the glue and spread the glue onto the construction paper, creating spider web images. Once children are satisfied with the glue, have them sprinkle silver glitter over the paper and shake off the excess; the glitter will stick to the glue, creating the image of a shining, glittering spider web.

    Spider Masks

    • Use paper plates to make spider masks that children can use to pretend they are arachnids. Cut eye holes out of a paper plate and have children color the back of a paper plate with black crayon or marker. Cut eight thin rectangles from black construction paper and show children how to fold them, accordion style. Glue four of the accordion-folded rectangles to either side of the paper plate, creating legs for the spiders. Glue a craft stick to the bottom of the paper plate, which children can use to hold their masks over their faces.

    Egg Carton Spiders

    • Turn the cups from egg cartons into spiders. Cut the cups off of an egg carton and punch four holes in either side of each cup. Distribute the cups to children and instruct them to paint the cups black. When the paint has dried, help children insert black pipe cleaners into each of the holes that have been punched in their cups, making legs for the spiders. Complete the craft by gluing googly eyes onto the front of the cups.
