Apple Theme Circle Time Ideas

Circle time is a time to get your pre-K students quiet and listening so you can teach them something new. Your students will love answering questions and participating in your apple-themed activities. Apple themes can be used during the fall, when talking about nutrition or when talking about how things grow.
  1. Word of the Week

    • Choose a word of the week related to apples or things associated with apples. Use it in your classroom during the week each time your class sits at the circle. For example, words can be "fruit," "healthy" or "harvest," since these are all words that are related to apples in some way. Write the word and definition on a large sheet of paper to hang in front of the classroom. Ask the students each day what the word of the week is and talk about the definition.

    How Things Grow

    • Bring in a couple apples to the classroom. Cut open the apples and show the students the seeds. Ask what other kinds of fruits and vegetables come from seeds. Ask your students what grows from apple seeds. Show pictures of an apple tree and an apple tree branch with apples that are ready to be picked. Explain to the children that each time an apple grows on a tree, more apple trees can be planted.

    Apple Tasting

    • Bring in several varieties of apples all cut up into small pieces. Allow the students to take one piece of each apple at a time and try it. Ask the students what is different about each apple. Let the children guess where different varieties of apples are grown, and show them on a map where each type of apple is grown. Ask each child which apple is their favorite and make a tally to see which apple is the most popular.

    Teach the Letter "A"

    • Apples are classically associated with the letter "A." Use the word "apple" to teach students about the letter "A" as well as the short vowel "A" sound. Cut out some apple shapes with leaves and laminate them. Write an "A" on each apple with permanent marker and let the students take them home as a reminder. Practice saying and writing "A" in circle time and elsewhere in the classroom.
