Learning Themes for Children

Introducing new themes every week or every month is a useful way to keep children engaged and interested in new lessons. A theme for young children can be anything, but it needs to be a subject that will allow for exploration in early literature, art, science, and even movement. A theme needs to have several different activities associated with it, so children can make connections.
  1. All About Me

    • Young children can talk about what makes them special.

An "All About Me" theme can be a very detailed one with room for many learning opportunities. Teachers can discuss how every child and every person is special. It can be a good way to talk about people with disabilities. Also, this type of theme can include activities on parts of the body, emotions, and family members. This theme can explore the concepts of individual and communal identities, as well. For example, every person is different, but these persons share the same classroom, home, or community.

    Community Helpers

    • Children could come dressed as their favorite community helper.

A "community helpers" theme is another large theme full of learning possibilities. Teachers can discuss types of jobs people have when they are grown up. They also can talk about how every job in a community is important. Add dress-up props and outfits to the role-playing center. Also, arrange field trips to local places, such as the fire department or the train station. Ask a police officer and a librarian to speak to a class about their jobs. A teacher could tie in "stranger danger" information, as well.

    Fairy Tales

    • Adding props to dress-up areas can allow students to act out fairy tales.

A "fairy tale" theme is a good way to turn a classroom into a world of mystery. First, dozens of stories and books on tape can allow for literature and listening activities. Second, numerous arts and crafts can help reinforce the different fairy tales. For example, children can make crowns and magic wands, or they can use blocks to build castles and towers. Some fairy tales such as "Jack and the Beanstalk" involve plants, which could introduce science-related activities. For example, students could plant and watch beans grow.

    Multiculturalism

    • "Multiculturalism" is a theme that could be explored in every classroom at some point, especially in areas without much diversity. This is a great way to teach the appreciation of different peoples. Many books exist that portray different cultures. Teachers can also introduce numbers and colors in another language. A teacher could bring in a few different ethnic foods to try each week to further encourage the appreciation of differences.
