Firefighter Activities for Preschoolers

Learning about community helpers is an important part of the preschool curriculum. Teach a unit about firefighters in October as a part of Fire Prevention Week or choose your own week to honor firefighters in your community. Either way, preschoolers will learn about the job of a firefighter as well as important fire safety information with the activities that go along with a firefighter theme.
  1. Dramatic Play Activities

    • Place firefighter clothing, such as hats, boots and coats, in your dramatic play area for the children to try on and role-play with. Paint a large refrigerator box red and cut it to look like a fire engine. Add some chairs, a steering wheel, a bell and pieces of a garden hose and you will have a dramatic play area where preschool children will love to be and emulate firefighters.

    All About Firefighters Activity

    • Read a few books about firefighters to your preschoolers. Some recommended choices are "Fire! Fire!" by Gail Gibbons, "Firefighter A to Z" by Chris L. Demarest and "All Aboard Fire Trucks" by Teddy Slater. After reading a book about fighting fires, discuss the equipment that firemen use. Then give children pictures of different items of firefighting clothing and equipment along with items from other jobs as well. Have the children sort the pictures into two groups based on whether they are used by firefighters.

    Fire Safety Activities

    • Teach your preschoolers about fire safety. Discuss safety rules about staying away from matches, candles and lighters, crawling low under fire and how to "Stop! Drop! and Roll!" Have a fire drill in the classroom and send a letter home to parents encouraging them to have a fire drill at home and to set up a place to meet in the event of a fire. Let each child draw a picture of one of the safety rules and display the pictures in the classroom.

    Meet a Firefighter

    • Schedule a field trip to a local fire station. Many fire stations offer tours for young children. If you are unable to take a field trip, arrange for a firefighter to visit your classroom to talk with your students. He might even bring a fire truck for the children to see, climb on and explore.
