Teach your toddler about stars by bringing him outside on a clear night. Point out the stars and talk about what color they look like and how they light up the sky. Describe the stars for your toddler using words such as bright, far, sparkly, and high. Hearing different words will expand your child's vocabulary. Later, make a star with your toddle. Cut out a star shape from yellow construction paper. Let your toddler use glue, glitter and beads or stickers and stamps to decorate the star. Hang the star somewhere your toddler can see it often, such as in her room.
Explain to your toddler that the moon, sun and stars make up our solar system. Spend time looking at books with pictures of different planets or of the whole solar system. Make a picture of the solar system with your toddler using chalk and black construction paper. Prepare the craft by taping different-sized circles on a piece of black construction paper (these are the planets). Next, have your toddler trace the circle with white chalk then rub the chalk to blur it. You can remove the paper circles, and your toddler will be left with "planets" in a night sky. Add gold star stickers to complete the solar system. Have your toddler place the stickers wherever he likes.
There are many things you can talk about related to the sun with your toddler. On a nice sunny day, go outside, and ask your toddler why it is so bright out. Tell your toddler about the sun, and how the sun makes it light during the day, and how the sun provides heat for us. Do not ask your toddler to look directly at the sun, instead, show your toddler pictures of the sun in a book or magazine. Ask your toddler what color the sun is and what it's shape is. Make a sun with your toddler, by letting your toddler paint or color a paper plate yellow. Then, trace your toddlers hand on yellow paper and cut out eight yellow hands. Glue these around the rim of the plate to make rays. Let your toddler make a smiley face inside the circle.
Teach your toddlers about planets using books and pictures. Ask your toddler to describe the colors of the planets and the shape. Give your toddler cut out colored circles, and let him choose which ones he wants to use for his project. Let your toddler pick as many or as few as he wants. Then, have your toddler brush sparkle paint over a piece of wax paper, then glue down the planets on the wax paper. Glue the wax paper onto black construction paper, leaving about an inch border on all sides. Hang the craft where your toddler can see it.
