How to Develop an Anti-Bias Curriculum for Preschoolers

Many preschool centers seek to include an anti-bias curriculum in their programs. The goal of this curriculum in to dispel stereotypes and prejudices leading to racism, ageism, sexism and other negative "isms" that causes exclusion. Teachers and child care center directors are responsible for creating an environment that is all-accepting and all-inclusive. The center or classroom should display a diversity of ethnicity and cultures as well as differences such as physical disabilities and special needs. Presenting an anti-bias curriculum through the medium of play is the most effective way to teach preschoolers.

      Reflect a multicultural attitude in the classroom materials. Use various flesh-toned shades of paper and crayons to promote positive perceptions of students' self-image in the art corner. Choose age-appropriate picture books that talk about physical disabilities or have characters with such disabilities for the book corner.

      Provide dolls reflecting both genders and a variety of ethnicities and including physical challenges. Create a dramatic play area with costumes and props from around the world. Teach about holidays celebrated in various cultures.

      Play music from various cultures and provide ethnic musical instruments for the children to engage in hands-on music making activities. Play a variety of outdoor games from around the world. Plan science activities that include the background of scientists and discoveries worldwide. Offer multicultural cooking projects.

      Invite a variety of professionals to visit the classroom to talk about their jobs, such as women bankers and doctors and men who are nurses or chefs. Let children see men and women in various types of career roles.
