Pre-Kindergarten Bird Activities

Encourage pre-kindergarten children to start noticing the wildlife around them by teaching them about birds at a young age. When teaching your pre-k class, you can prepare some hands-on activities that will teach them about birds, as well as build their social and fine motor skills. Awarding small prizes for a job well done and to all game winners will entice the children to try their best.
  1. Easy Activities

    • Printable bird coloring pages are available on the Internet. The children can use these to color pictures of different birds. Other activities include connect-the-dot puzzles and large-piece bird puzzles. Try a bird-drawing contest by printing several pictures of birds and placing them on tables. The children must use the pictures as a guide and draw a picture of a bird on their own blank sheet of paper. Award prizes for the best, most creative and most realistic-looking bird drawings.

    Memory Games

    • Print pictures of birds (two of each) on small squares of card stock for a bird memory match game. Laminate the pictures for more durability. Place the pictures face down on a table and let the children take turns flipping over two of the cards. The child who finds the most pairs of birds wins the game. For another memory game, place pictures of birds on a board and have the children look at the pictures. Tell them to place their head on their desks and take one picture down. When the children look back up, the first child to tell you which picture is missing from the group wins a small prize.

    Birdfeeder Crafts

    • Allow the preschoolers to make bird feeders to hang outside the classroom window. They can enjoy watching the variety of birds that eat off the feeder. Have them each make their own or allow the children to work in groups to make only a few. Place a pinecone on a sheet of wax paper and have the children cover it in peanut butter using a knife or spoon. Use another spoon to pour birdseed all over the peanut butter. You can use nuts or sunflower seeds instead of birdseed as well. Other bird feeder ideas include covering a large, soft pretzel, stale slice of bread or piece of toast in peanut butter and covering it in birdseed.

    Other Games

    • Have the children play a prize game using several pictures of different kinds of birds. Place the pictures on the ground in a circle. Play music and have the children walk around the bird pictures. When the music stops, each child must stand on a picture. Call out a type of bird and the child standing on that type of bird wins a small prize. You can also put a twist on the classic "Hot Potato" game with a game of "Hot Bird" using a large plush bird. The winner gets to keep the bird as a prize.
