Help the kids make a functional craft that they can take home and give to their parents to use around the house or garden. Inspire them to use paint to create a black-and-yellow-striped bee pattern on vases or flowerpots. They can also paint small bees on the pots and use glue to attach plastic bees or bee buttons. Bee-themed paper vases make a colorful addition around the house (see Resources).
Include bee-themed cooking projects for your preschoolers to help out with before a bee- or bug-inspired class party. You can make sugar cookies for the kids and then help them decorate the cookies with black, white and yellow frosting. The kids can use the frosting to make stripes seen on a bee's back or they can draw little bees on the cookie, depending on their skill level. Decorate a few different types of bee cookies to give the kids ideas. Do the same type of thing with cupcakes, cakes and other types of desserts and foods.
It's not too early to start teaching preschool students letters in the alphabet. Make craft projects using paper bees and the letter B. Tell the kids that the letter B is the second letter in the alphabet and it's also the first letter in the word "bee." Print out coloring pages (see Resources) with buzzing bees and the letter B printed on the front. Encourage the kids to color the pages and add the completed colored drawings to a class book. The kids can also work together to make a giant poster with a large letter B in the middle. Help the kids paint the letter on the poster and then paint their own versions of little bees flying around the large letter.
Help your preschool students make bee collages featuring different bee themes. They can make one collage all about various bee species from around the world. This collage may include pictures of these bees cut out from magazines, drawings and decorations such as pressed flowers. The kids can also make a bee collage showcasing symbols associated with bees such as pictures of a honeycomb, honey, flowers and other general photos from a bee habitat. Print pictures from online sources for the kids to use or find magazines with several pictures of bees, flowers and other plants. Some kids might want to decorate their collage with bee-shaped buttons, paper bees or little plastic bees.
