Activities for Preschoolers With Wheelbarrows and Wagons

Wagons and wheelbarrows are handy tools that you can use in your preschool class. These small hauling vehicles can serve a variety of purposes. You can use them to teach your preschoolers about teamwork or you can play different hauling games that can help keep them entertained and physically active.
  1. Relay Race

    • Play this game outside or in a gym class. Split your preschoolers up into equal sized groups. Give each group a small wagon or wheelbarrow. Place a small toy in each wagon or wheelbarrow. Put half of each group on one end of the playing field and the other half on the other side. The kids must haul their wagon across the playing field to their team. The next player takes the wagon and races to the other side. The first team to have all their players pull the wagon wins. Monitor them along with an aide or two to make sure they are playing properly.

    Covered Wagon

    • Teach your preschoolers about the pioneers by playing covered wagon. Briefly discuss the pioneers, discussing how they moved across the country with "covered wagons." Split the class into equal sized groups and give each group a covered wagon. Each group must find different toys and items they want to take with them in their wagon. Place these items throughout the room in easy-to-access areas, such as group tables and on the floor. Each group can take one item from each pile. Once they've gotten all the items, they should place a small sheet on top of their wagon to cover it.

    Garden Work

    • Take your children outside during the warmer months. Find an area of the school where you can freely dig, move dirt and plant plants. Discuss this with your principal before doing this activity. Give each child a small, child-sized wheelbarrow and shovel. Tell them you are going to be gardening. Show them how to dig with the shovel and how to put the dirt in the wheelbarrow. Also show them how to push a wheelbarrow. Push the wheelbarrows around the yard. Put small flowers or plants in each hole. Help the students cover up the plant roots with dirt.

    Toy Hauler

    • Place a small red wagon in your classroom and assign one of your students as the "toy hauler." Pick out the toys the children can play with before they show up to class. Place these toys in the wheelbarrow. During play time, the children must line up in a row to get a toy. The toy hauler pulls the wagon in front of each child. They must grab the toy they want as it passes. The toy hauler gets first choice of toy, however. After play time is over, the toy hauler must take the wagon to each child to collect the toys.
