How to Make a Pre-K Math Game

Preschool is not just about socializing and practicing school, it is an important time to build the foundation for future math skills. Children in preschool can practice patterns, counting, addition, and subtraction. It’s not necessary to buy premade games for children to practice these skills. You can make your own games out of simple materials you probably already have on hand.

Instructions

  1. Bingo Marker Patterns

    • 1

Cut strips of manila paper 2 inches by 11 inches long, enough for each child to have several.

    • 2

Cut strips of card stock paper that are 2 inches by 11 inches long for the master patterns.

    • 3

Using bingo markers, make colored dots on the card stock strips in different patterns. Make the patterns in a range from simple to difficult.

    • 4

Laminate the patterned strips if you want them to last through more than one class.

    • 5

Set up a station with the bingo markers and the patterned strips. Ask children to recreate the patterns on their manila strips with the bingo markers.

    Sorting Shapes

    • 6

Buy precut shapes or cut out a variety of 2-inch shapes in one color.

    • 7

Use a word processing program to create the students’ sorting sheets. On a horizontally oriented page, make four horizontal boxes 2 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches wide.

    • 8

Set up a station with all the paper shapes in one container. Have students make rows of the same shape by gluing down the shapes in their boxes.
