Games That Teach the Months of the Year to Preschoolers in Spanish

Preschool students do much of their learning through play. Games appeals to a preschooler's creative side and sense of discovery. Plus, preschoolers get time to interact and cooperate with children their own age. Learning the names of the months in Spanish is a memorization exercise, so use games with simple rules that promote repetition and memory recall.
  1. Musical Months

    • Download a song for teaching the months of the year in Spanish and teach the song to the class. Set up a game of musical chairs by creating a circle of chairs, backs facing inward, in the middle of the classroom. Use one less chair than there are students playing the game. Play the months of the year song on a stereo. When the music is on, students sing along as they dance around the outside of the chair circle, but when the music is turned off they must scramble for a chair. The player left without a chair is out of the game, and one chair is removed from the circle for the next round.

    Missing Month

    • Print each month in Spanish on its own flashcard and decorate the cards with drawings, stickers or glitter. Gather students around a table and lay the cards out for them to see. Point at each card and go through the names of the months together. Send one student outside of the room so he cannot hear or see which month is being taken away from the table. If he identifies the name of the missing month in Spanish, he gets to choose the next card to be removed from the table.

    Papa Caliente (Hot Potato)

    • Choose an item, such as a ball or small toy, that students can pass around. The item doesn't have to be a real potato, but introduce the object to the preschoolers as a "hot potato." Have students form a circle and pass the hot potato to the person on their left, but they must say the name of a month in Spanish before the potato can be passed on. Students cannot repeat the month that was used by the person before them.

    Tic-Tac-Ole!

    • Create tic-tac-toe cards with articles of colored clothing in each square. For example, squares may contain blue pants, a pink bow or a red sweater. Hang a clothesline across the classroom and hang large illustrations of the clothing articles that match those on the cards. Label each piece of clothing with the name of a month in Spanish. There should only be 12 articles of clothing on the line, one for each month. Draw from a hat the Spanish names for each month and announce them aloud. Students will then mark the corresponding item of clothing if it appears on their card. The winner is the first player to get three marks in a row.
