Good Creative Math Activities for Preschoolers

Preschoolers enjoy working with their hands, and you can use this to your advantage to begin teaching simple math concepts. Numbers, counting, patterns and shapes are all aspects of a preschooler's world, and you can introduce engaging activities that reinforce these concepts. Use the supplies and materials you have on hand to introduce creative math activities in your preschool classroom.
  1. Clap Counting

    • Gather your preschoolers into a circle with their legs crossed in front of them. Ask them to place their hands on their thighs. Begin slowly counting to ten, clapping as you say each number. Encourage the preschoolers the join in the counting and clapping. Change your motions to clap for one number then slap your thighs for the next number. Additional movements might include clapping the floor, stomping your feet or patting your tummy. Continue counting and clapping, changing movements periodically, until preschoolers get the hang of counting.

    Dice Match-Up

    • Provide teams of two preschoolers with one die and pre-made cards with different numbers of pictures on them, such as one butterfly or six apples. Include several of each number one through six. Show the teams how to roll the die and match one of the cards to the number they roll. As preschoolers match their numbers, have them place the card next to them, taking it out of play. Alternate players until all of the cards have been taken from the play pile. Replace the cards in the center and repeat the game several times to reinforce counting concepts.

    Complete the Pattern

    • Lay out several pattern blocks or pieces of paper cut into different shapes. As you lay out the shapes, create a repeating pattern, such as square, circle, square, circle. Gather the preschoolers in a circle and show them the pattern. Work together to identify the pattern and to choose what shape comes next in the pattern. Make two or three more patterns as a class. Provide paper shapes to each preschooler and ask them to make and glue repeating patterns to blank pieces of paper. Make a display to show off the creations.

    Hidden Math

    • While your preschoolers are out of the classroom, hide different math objects around the classroom. Write numbers on pieces of paper and hide them or hide paper shapes. Invite the students into the classroom and instruct them to go on a math hunt and find numbers, shapes and any other math objects you have hidden. When all the objects have been found, gather the preschoolers together and identify the numbers and shapes together. Repeat the hunt over several days to reinforce the concepts.
