What is a central school?

A central school is a primary or secondary school that serves a large, dispersed rural area, typically combining some of the features of an elementary school with those of a high school.

Central schools were established in some areas of the United States starting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a way to provide education to students who lived in remote areas.

Central schools typically offer a wider range of courses and services than smaller rural schools, and they may also serve as community centers. Some central schools are also residential schools, where students live on campus.
