Why were many private schools established in the mid-1950s?

Many private schools were not established in the mid-1950s. In the mid-1950s, the United States Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. As a result, many white families enrolled their children in private schools in order to avoid having them attend integrated public schools.
