Numerous clubs and activities teach middle school students about subjects such as culture, math, science, leadership, English and history. In some school districts, a homework club provides students with a quiet place to complete their assignments and potentially receive additional assistance without the need for tutoring. Foreign language clubs may offer members an opportunity to experience culture through a trip to the native country.
Various clubs and organizations refocus student efforts on the arts such as theater, band and vocal performance. Students have the option to play an instrument and may be granted membership into jazz band or chamber orchestra to enhance their music education. Other clubs are centered on dance, theater or staging for either. Performance as well as technical skills are reinforced during club meetings as the students are seasoned in the arts.
Annually middle school students are elected as student government officials to represent the student body via student council. The National Association of Student Councils offers week-long conferences and programs that allow the elected middle schoolers to learn and to execute leadership and service to the school and its enrollees. It also encourages student council members to volunteer within their communities by granting a President's Volunteer Service Award distributed from the White House.
The Future Business Leaders of America -- Middle Level is geared toward those potentially seeking a future in the world of business. The group organizes conferences for the students to increase levels of business leadership and entrepreneurial skills as well as to strengthen the students' confidence and their accomplishments on a business level. The national club also prepares students by teaching money management skills and the development of occupational goals.
