Different Types of Paragraphs

Books, magazines and essays can contain different types of paragraphs. The type of paragraph used depends partly on what the writer is trying to communicate. While a story may be filled with narrative paragraphs, a magazine advertisement may try to attract customers with persuasive ones.
  1. Descriptive

    • A descriptive paragraph is composed of sentences strung together to present a detailed single image of person, place, thing, event or idea. The writer often describes to the reader exactly what they would see, hear, smell or taste. In using this and other literary devices such as personification and simile, this paragraph type paints an accurate and often literal picture for the reader.

    Narrative

    • A narrative paragraph is generally used to tell a story. This paragraph type has a discernible beginning, middle and end. This format allows the writer to create a "hook" in the first sentence and finish with a concluding sentence that summarizes the narrative. The writer uses informal language and a lack of descriptive analysis to ensure the paragraph engages the reader while creating a progression from one event to the next.

    Persuasive

    • In a persuasive paragraph, the writer attempts to convince the reader of something. An opinion or argument is usually presented on a topic within the first sentence, then an explanation for why the reader should agree is offered. This argument is supported by facts and persuasive strategies and often involves appealing to the reader's emotions. A paragraph meant to persuade the reader that smoking is unhealthy may include statistics on the correlation between smoking and diseases such as lung cancer.

    Explanatory

    • The goal of an explanatory paragraph is not only to give information but to explain a subject thoroughly. This is commonly done in a way that teaches readers about the subject or informs them on how to do something. For example, recipes and travel guides use explanatory paragraphs to explain step by step what must be done to accomplish the task.
