Junior High Interview Questions for a Lawyer

A lawyer may visit a junior high school class as part of a lesson about the legal system, or as a way of inspiring students to begin thinking about possible careers. Whether he simply stands in front of the classroom and takes questions, or a single student is chosen to interview him, the questions should be thoughtful and chosen ahead of time so as not to waste the opportunity.
  1. Career Choice

    • Questions that address law as a career choice might include: How hard is it to become a lawyer? How much education do you need to become one? What courses should you take, and what degree do you need? How many different kinds of law are there, and how do the educational requirements differ for each one? What skills or qualities do you need to become a successful lawyer? Do most lawyers work for themselves or for others? Are TV lawyers an accurate portrayal of your profession?

    Duties

    • Ask the lawyer questions about his duties, such as: What do lawyers do? What does your average workday look like? What makes up the bulk of your duties? What's the nicest thing about your job -- and the worst thing? Why? What's the most difficult part of your work, and why? What brings you the most job satisfaction? Is yours a 9 to 5 job, or do you often work overtime or unpredictable hours? Are lawyers often required to travel? How often are you required to be in court?

    Income

    • Questions addressing income might include: What's the average income range for a lawyer? How does that income vary by specialty? How much is a lawyer's income determined by whether she works in a practice with others or for herself? How much can an experienced and successful lawyer earn? Does a lawyer need continuing education to make the most money? Which law specialties offer the highest income opportunities? Which offer the least?

    Outlook and Advancement Opportunities

    • Ask the lawyer: What's the outlook for a law career in this economy? Is the outlook projected to be good over the next five to 10 years? Can I expect a job to be waiting for me at the end of law school? What's my advancement potential in this field? Is it better for lawyers in firms, or for lawyers who work alone? What qualities do lawyers need to become judges? How do you become a judge?
