Assign the students in your middle school class the task of creating their own website page. There are many tutorials on the subject, if you are unfamiliar with how it is done. You can access one of these websites with a tutorial in the reference section. Instruct the students to use different fonts, colors and graphics in order to personalize the website. It does not have to be a page on them personally; they can dedicate it to a favorite activity, item, book or movie if they choose.
There are many different graphing options available through the Excel program in Microsoft Office. Assign the students to compile data using surveys on a specific topic. Some topic ideas include birthday month, favorite color, favorite season or favorite college team. The students can choose any topic that interests them and then survey friends, family and neighbors. After they have collected their data, they can use Excel graph wizard to create a variety of graphs such as line, bar and pie graphs.
Have students in your middle-school classroom research a topic and then create a seven to ten-slide powerpoint presentation to share with the class. They can use the Internet or library to complete their research. You should approve their subject matter before they begin their study of it. Some appropriate topics for children of this age would include an explorer, a wildlife animal or a mathematician. Each presentation will include an introduction and conclusion slide leaving five to eight slides to be filled with information.
Tangram puzzles are part of the Chinese culture and consist of seven geometrical shapes. Creating their own tangram using lines and colors on paint is a fun way to incorporate tech ed into a middle-school geometry class. This project can be completed by the students with the help of the Tangram site in the reference section. It shows how tangrams are constructed, the measurements of the different shapes and guides students through construction of their own. After the puzzle has been created, students can print it out, laminate the page if available and cut out the shapes.
