Middle School Computer Technology Projects

Middle school is the perfect time to build upon computer concepts learned in elementary school. Many times students have already been introduced to typing, creating word documents and developing multimedia presentations by the time they arrive in middle school. There are a plethora of projects available to both review what has already been taught and learn new techniques using computer technology.
  1. Biographies

    • Research a historical figure's life and contributions to society. Use a drawing program to make a chronological timeline of key events both in the person's life and important historical dates surrounding the time in which they lived. Create a Microsoft Word brochure advertising an invention they designed or campaign rhetoric for a political office they held. Create Web pages in Publisher, compiling facts and pictures about the person's life.

    Business Management

    • Pick a retail business to manage. Use Excel to create a budget and track income and expenses. Prepare a survey about products the business sells and compile and graph the results. Draw the company logo using a drawing program. Create letterhead and write letters to clients, stockholders and employees regarding a key issue in the company.

    Book Report

    • Assign a twist to the traditional book report and teach students how to create an animated book report using PowerPoint. Incorporate all features of the software, including pictures, images, text, video and voice. Create slides about the book's setting, characters and plot. Record your summary of the book.

    Science Plant Classification

    • Download a free online form and create a data entry form for plant classification fields. Enter 20 different plant classifications and create a database documenting different fields for each classification, including kingdom, subkingdom, division and class. Insert pictures of each plant. Sort the database into different reports including alphabetical order, species and families.

    Google Earth

    • Use Google Earth to map out historical imagery during key battles in a major United States war. Design a travel agent tour of a major city, creating placemarks of tourist attractions, museums and out-of-the-way spots. Incorporate geometry lessons using Google Earth's drawing and measuring tools. Map out different routes from a student's house to various locations around the world, such as the shortest, longest or most scenic route.
