How to Figure Out the Mode of a Distribution Frequency

The mode of a distribution frequency refers to the number or category that appears most often. The mode can be useful in identifying results from a study. For example, if you looked at the age distribution of people in a certain area, the mode would tell you which age is most common. Similarly, if you looked at people's favorite color, the mode of that distribution would be the most commonly selected color.

Instructions

    • 1

Sort the data into different categories or from lowest to highest. For example, if your data is people's favorite color, group the responses by favorite color. Alternatively, if your data comprises age, sort the data from lowest to highest.

    • 2

Count the number of times each number or category appears. For example, if three people responded "blue," you would note that there are three data points in the blue category. Alternatively, 12 people you surveyed were 23 years old, you would note that there are 12 23-year-olds.

    • 3

Select the number or category with the most appearances as the mode of the distribution frequency. If multiple numbers or categories appear the most number of times, the data set has multiple modes. Do not average the multiple data points together. For example, if 20 people are 25 years old and 20 people are also 30 years old, the mode of the data set would be 25 and 30.
