How to Celebrate Earth Day With Seventh and Eighth Grade Science Students

There are times when teaching a certain topic becomes easier because of what is happening outside of the classroom. These times are called teachable moments. Earth Day is a teachable moment that occurs every year on April 22. This is the perfect time to teach students what they can do to take care of the planet. Students can celebrate Earth Day in many fun and educational ways. Allowing students to choose how to celebrate makes Earth Day more meaningful to their own environments.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin discussing Earth Day with your students two weeks before April 22. Ask your students to list ways that they think they can help the earth.

    • 2

Divide your class into groups of three or four. Instruct each group to design a project for Earth Day. The project must be something that they can do themselves. Give the students a one week deadline. Provide at least one class period for the students to work on the project design.

    • 3

Evaluate your students' project ideas. Make suggestions where necessary. Return the project proposals to the students the next day.

    • 4

Instruct the students to complete their projects. Tell the students they will present their experiences to the class on Earth Day.

    • 5

Separate students into their groups on Earth Day. Students will present their projects to the class.

    • 6

Facilitate a discussion with the class about each project. Ask them if they thought it was effective and why or why not. Ask them if the project is something they can do regularly. Allow at least a five minutes of discussion for each project.
