How to Draw a Pentagon, a Hexagon and an Octagon

Drawing a symmetrical pentagon, hexagon or octagon is often part of geometry class. Knowing the correct angles of each of these shapes helps in drawing them correctly, but certain "tricks" can be used that make it possible to draw them correctly even if you don't know all the angles. Try these ideas for drawing the perfect five-, six- or eight-sided geometric shapes.

Instructions

  1. Pentagon

    • 1

Draw a five-prong star and connect the exterior points to form a free-hand pentagon. The basic pentagon consists of five sides, all with 108-degree inside angles. Drawing one of these can be a difficult process, especially if an assignment only gives one or two important marker points of the pentagon.

    • 2

Draw a circle using the compass to start the process of a precise pentagon shape drawing.

    • 3

Draw a horizontal line in the middle of the circle using the ruler. Draw a vertical line in the middle of the circle using the ruler. This line will intersect with the horizontal line exactly in the middle of the circle.

    • 4

Find the midpoint between the center of the circle and the edge of the horizontal line, using a ruler, label this point A.

    • 5

Place compass on this point and draw an arch from the top of the circle meeting up with the right side of the horizontal line, label this point B. The distance from the top of the circle to point B is how long each of the five sides should be.

    • 6

Use a ruler to draw the sides starting with the top point of the circle and vertical line.

    Hexagon

    • 7

Draw the center circle and keep the circumference of the compass the same on the compass to draw more circles. The six sides of a hexagon are all equal in length and have interior angles of 120-degrees each. Using the compass you can draw a hexagon by making circles.

    • 8

Pick a point on the circle to start a second circle of the same circumference.

    • 9

Place the compass on the point where the first circle and second circle intersect and form the third circle. Continue around the main circle, drawing additional circles at each new intersecting point, use a ruler to connect all the intersecting points and create a hexagon.

    Octagon

    • 10

Make a circle using the compass. The octagon may seem like the most complex polygon to draw because it has eight sides, with each side having an inside angle of 135-degrees. Thinking of the octagon like a pizza will help you draw this shape and make it one of the easiest multi-edge shapes to draw.

    • 11

Split the circle down the middle both vertically and horizontally using a ruler.

    • 12

Separate each of the four quadrants one last time equally in the middle and the result is a pie-like picture.

    • 13

Connect the points of each piece of the pie to form the octagon; use a ruler to keep the lines straight. The result will be a perfectly shaped octagon.
