What are Mathematical Tree Diagrams?

Math graphs show the relationship between different variables over a specific time frame. Charts measure the performance that dictates what the graphs will look like. However, before you take any of those steps, a tree diagram can help you decide which options are the best for the information you are working with.
  1. What is a Tree Diagram

    • A tree diagram is a diagram that contains lines stemming out from the same point. The lines in a tree diagram will never form a closed loop because they show all possible outcomes or scenarios that can take place in a given event.

    Who Uses a Tree Diagram

    • People use tree diagrams in public, private and government jobs to help with various projects. Anyone planning an event, business or service can utilize a tree diagram to limit the options he has to consider. For example, event coordinators use tree diagrams to predict how many people will attend a function. Businesses use tree diagrams to predict how many clients will need their products. Even governments use tree diagrams to determine how many different services their people will require.

    Benefits of a Tree Diagram

    • A tree diagram will work for a variety of things that need to be predicted. For example, business owners need to limit their spending in order to stay profitable. Every customer has different needs and the products must be available to keep the customers happy. Using a tree diagram will help predict the number of different products needed to satisfy each customer's personal needs. This will save the owner money and time by predicting how much of each product is needed.

    Example of a Tree Diagram

    • A box has a red, green and yellow ball. Therefore, a tree diagram is needed to find the order of colors that can be drawn. Draw a dot, and then extend three lines from it. Have one line extend at an upward angle, have another extend at a downward angle and extend the last in a straight line.

Write "red" on the top line, "green" on the middle and "yellow" on the bottom line. Extend two more lines from each of the three lines. Write "red" on the first line and "green and yellow" on the two lines extending from it. Write "green" on the middle line and "red and yellow" on the lines extending from it. Write "yellow" on the last line and "red and green" on the lines extending from it. This indicates the possibilities that each one of the three colors you draw first will give two different possibilities for the order of colors. Overall, there are six different possible orders of colors that can be drawn.
