How to Convert Hectares to Meters Squared

In the metric system, hectares and meters squared both measure area, a property composed of two different dimensions. Hectares (ha), or the larger area unit, are akin to the acre, measuring about 2.5 times more than the American and imperial unit. Square meters (m^2), based on a square with one edge measuring a single meter, are about 1.2 times greater than a square yard. Through simple calculations, numeric manipulations and online conversion programs, you can easily convert area measured in hectares to its equivalent in meters squared.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the number of hectares by 10,000 to convert to square meters. For an example, 20 ha multiplied by 10,000 converts to 20,000 m^2.

    • 2

Add four zeros to the right end of the number and shift the decimal four places to the right to convert hectares to square meters. For an example, adding four zeros to 5.875 ha results in 5.8750000, and shifting the decimal four places to the right results in 58,750.000 or 58,750 m^2.
