Ideas for 8th-Grade Reports

Eighth graders are building skills that will prepare them for the rigors of high school. Assignments that involve choosing and researching a topic, narrowing that topic into a thesis and completing a written report will serve students well in high school language arts, social studies and science. Eighth graders can also gain crucial teamwork experience by completing a group report project.
  1. Language Arts Reports

    • Eighth graders can demonstrate their knowledge of and critical thinking about a book they read by completing a report about the book. Offer students a range of book report ideas and let them select the approach they prefer. Students can create a character analysis of a compelling main character such as Bilbo Baggins from "The Hobbit" or Jo March from "Little Women." Students who have read books exploring historical or science fiction settings such as those in "Ender's Game" or "Huckleberry Finn" can create a report detailing the environment of the book and how it affects the story.

    Social Studies Reports

    • Proper researching methods and correct citation of sources are two skills that eighth graders can acquire through completing a social studies report. If your students will be studying a period in American history, such as the years leading up to the Civil War, have them research a related aspect of 19th century American life. They could create a report comparing the life of freed slaves in the North versus those still in captivity in the South, or a report about life on a Southern plantation in general. They might research the beginning of the Abolition movement or the historical facts surrounding the secession of the Southern states from the Union. Students can also create a report comparing the background and training of generals in the Union army versus those in the Confederate army.

    Science Report

    • Many eighth graders are studying the classification of plants and animals. Have students research and write a report on a certain animal species or type of plant. They should describe how the animal or plant fits into the larger classifications as well as what distinguishes it from other different types. Students could keep a field study journal for a period of time, creating a formal written report that details the observations recorded in the journal. Students could also research a prehistoric period of time and write a report detailing plant and animal life as it existed back then.

    Group Biography Report

    • Students can compile written information into a group report that provides details about the life of a famous person. Divide students into small groups of three or four and have them choose an author whose works they are reading in language arts, a historical figure or a scientist. The group will divide the subject of the biography's life and accomplishments up, with each student covering a portion of the total material to be reported. Encourage the groups to consider dividing the material evenly. They could, for example, have one member research the person's childhood, one his young adulthood and one his mature years. Have the students combine their work into one final report to present to the class.
