7th Grade Math Geometry Projects

In seventh grade, geometry is often taught as part of a general math or algebra course. As part of that lesson, teachers may assign projects to reinforce the concepts taught in class. There are a variety of projects students could complete based on many geometric principles.
  1. Find the Lost Hunter

    • Find the Lost Hunter involves finding an imaginary lost hunter using a map and landmarks for points of reference. This will describe how the Global Positioning System use points of reference to triangulate locations. The "Search and Rescue Team" will talk to the lost hunter on a radio and ask questions regarding his location such as "What do you see around you?" The hunter will respond by describing any landmark's such as mountains, radio towers, large trees or rivers. Given three points of reference, the team can determine the lost hunters location, much like GPS uses satellites.

    Matching Game

    • Make a matching game to practice the names of geometric shapes. Draw geometric shapes and their written names on squares of cardstock. You may also print them on computer paper and laminate them for durability. To play the game, turn all of the cards face down on the table. Turn over two cards at at time, trying to match the shapes and their names. If the project will be displayed for others to view, you may attach Velcro to the cards and a display board so they can be attached while the board is standing upright.

    Sing a Song

    • Students with musical talent can write and sing a song about geometry. Make up an original song or change the lyrics to an existing song to describe the geometric principles discussed in class. The students may sing the song in front of the class or create a video that includes examples of geometric facts.

    Write a Report

    • Seventh grade geometry students can write a report about a mathematician. Research important mathematicians from history and choose one that is interesting. Obtain information about his life, such as where and when he lived, and his accomplishments. Include the ways that his discoveries are applied today and pictures of the person if available. Present the report to the class.
