5th Grade Math Geometry Concentration Games

Your fifth-grade students have learned that geometry is about shapes. You can supplement textbook learning with variations of the classic Concentration or Memory game that use geometric shapes and terms. Let your students cement the concepts of plane geometry and solid geometry as you study each one. Geometry concentration games are a fun and educational change of pace for your fifth-graders.
  1. Plane Shape Concentration

    • Make 20 cards with two copies each of 10 different planes shapes, such as a circle, isosceles triangle or rhomboid. Mix up the order of the cards and lay them face down in four rows of five cards each. Divide the class into groups of two students each. They should take turns choosing two cards trying to find a match. A player who finds a match gets another turn. Award points for each match found.

    3D Shapes Concentration

    • For this concentration game, you will make 10 cards with various 3D shapes, such as a cube, cylinder or sphere. Make the other 10 cards pictures of actual items in those shapes, such as a die, can and ball. Divide the class into groups of two. Mix up the cards and place them face down on the table in four rows of five cards each. Players should take turns choosing two cards to try to find a match. If someone finds a match, he should leave the cards face up and take another turn. Award points for each match found.

    Prism Concentration

    • Make 10 cards with various prism shapes, such as a hexagonal prism, pentagonal prism and triangular prism. Make the other 10 cards pictures of actual items in those shapes, such as a nut -- fastener that goes with a bolt -- a gift box shaped as a pentagon or a wedge of cheese. Divide the class into groups of two. Mix up the cards and place them face down on the table in four rows of five cards each. Players should take turns choosing two cards to try to find a match. If someone finds a match, she should leave the cards face up and take another turn. Award points for each match found.

    Geometry Concentration

    • Make 10 pairs of cards. Each pair will have one card that describes the shape and another that is a drawing of the shape, such as one card that says," right rectangle ABCD" and its match with a drawing of a rectangle with points labeled ABCD, a card saying, "right triangle" and a drawing of a right triangle, or a card saying, "acute triangle" and a drawing of an acute triangle. Mix up the cards and lay them face down on the table in four rows of five each. Divide the class into groups of two. They should take turns overturning two cards to see if they match. If they do, that player gets another turn. Award points for matches.
